When talking about effective personal branding, you have to go above and beyond the ordinary and do something more actionable to help you get recognized. You need to stand out, and if you want to make that happen, you need to deviate from the norm.
So, how do you do that?
Here are some of the unconventional approaches you can use for your personal branding. You do not necessarily have to use all of them; you just have to use at least one that you think can work for you as well as for your audience.
1. Target an influencer, and establish a relationship
You can begin by looking for influencers in your industry who can help you out. They can just be anyone who is also working on building their own branding. Don’t hesitate to reach out to them directly and establish relationships that can also lead to a genuine friendship. You do not need to have a lot because having a number of real friendships in your industry will be enough to make an impact.
2. Be very good with at least a single marketing channel
You do not necessarily have to have your content promotion across a number of channels. While this is not entirely discouraged, it is better if you focus on increasing engagement and production value on a single channel first.
3. Practice confidence
If you are confident, it will be a lot easier for you to take on new challenges, test new waters, and explore new opportunities in order to grow your personal brand. Learn how to step out of your comfort zone and practice your confidence daily.
4. Be silly
Most experts will advise you to be your best professional self, and this is not entirely wrong. This could be correct, in fact. However, it may not be what most people want. What they want is real engagement with humans. They want to feel the connectedness, and they will easily connect with you if you are also showing them your silly side.
It is okay to be professional when there is a need for you to be professional, but there are also situations where you also need to show your sense of humor, your human side. When you show that you also know how to have fun, you will be able to draw people’s attention.
5. Promote your content directly
Figure who your followers are, who your audience is. Take the time to get to know them more by means of social media and shared content. And then, look for the kind of content that will work for them: something that they need, something that will benefit them.
6. Start a community
Instead of joining a community, it is better if you start your own so that you can gather people together for a specific industry or niche which you are an expert of.
7. Develop your content around other people
When you build your content, it is better if you get other people involved in it so that you can create positive association and connection between the personal brand you are building and theirs. This is something that you can do through interviews or webinars which you sponsor and co-author for a specific content.
8. Bank on storytelling
The idea about storytelling is not something new. In fact, it has been around for many years, but what is ironic is that a significant number of people still do not leverage on it. What you must know is that you can find a good opportunity to incorporate storytelling into your branding strategy. If you are wondering what it does, it will help you make a more personal connection. When you do storytelling, you involve a human element which is something that many people will even appreciate. Without the connection, whatever you share will only seem like more of information.
9. Flaunt your quirks
People’s quirks are the ones that are most memorable and interesting. Use these to your advantage because these are the things that will make you a little different. These would set you apart from the rest, the things that will get you recognized and remembered.
